It’s time to take a second and look in the mirror and tell yourself some hard truths. Are you ready?
You are the only one who can take your dreams, create goals, and change your reality. It’s not up to anyone else. No one can make you stop spending money unnecessarily. No one else can build a business for you. No one can make you eat healthily, fix your relationships, go on dates for you. YOU are firmly in control of your life. Sometimes it’s hard to hear that though, there are things out of your control, but you are in control of how you handle yourself, and you have the ability to choose.
I’ve spent a lot of time listening to people. Some of these people are incredibly successful, and some of them aren’t. Over and over, ONE thing stuck out. The people who were successful had a single-minded determination to get to whatever goal they had, and they didn’t let anything get in the way. They KNEW that there was a way; they just had to find a way. They had an underlying reason to give EVERYTHING they could to accomplish their goal. We call it your why…Well, I think Simon Sinek called it that first, but it stands.
Your why is the thing that keeps you going no matter what. There are many things that can drive your why. There is a story of a lady who ended up alone, jobless with a baby, and she had no money for diapers. She sat on the floor of her apartment, with her baby and a towel wrapped around his waist, patting him on the stomach, promising him over and over again that this would never happen again, that she would give him a better life. Guess what she found her why, her reason to keep going when it was too hard, the motivation to keep fighting when she was tired, when it wasn’t fair, when no one else seemed to be fighting when she wasn’t sure what to do next, she found her why and she did everything to make it her reality. Take a few minutes and listen to her story. I CAN DO IT – Powerful Motivational Speech Video (Featuring Lisa Nichols)
Did you hear her conviction? Did you hear her unstoppable attitude? You have that same attitude inside you. You have that same power and fire in you, and here is the big secret that nobody is telling you, YOUR fire can be bigger. Your FIGHT can be stronger. But YOU are the only one who can find out. You have to sit down with yourself and decide that you are ready to take the plunge.
So how do you find your why? How do you find that thing that motivates you?
Step 1.) Be honest with yourself about your life. Are you satisfied with your job? With your relationships? With your financial situation? Are you ready to change? Are you ready to step outside of what you’re familiar with and comfortable with? Make a list of things that you know you should change, that you want to change, and that you are actively changing. Now make plans so that this time next year, you are actively working on all of those things.
Step 2.) Stop giving other people permission to derail you. This includes your “friends.” People who think they know more than you. Even your family. This isn’t permission to ignore your spouse and children. They are still important and your priority. They can still come first, and you can follow your dreams. Are you sitting on a couch watching the tv? You have time to research, learn, write, do. Even better, turn off the tv and get your family involved. But using your family as the reason why you never reached your goals puts the burden on them, and you are in charge of your life. It’s your choice and responsibility to continue to take charge of your days, so the years don’t slip away.
Step 3.) Determine what you want your life to look like. Do you want to be able to give with outrageous generosity? Do you want to travel the world? Do you want to be a stay at home mom? Do you want to make sure your children don’t have to take out student loans? This is your why. This thing has to be a goal you have that you would walk through fire and lose your friends to achieve. It’s that dream that you’ve held off reaching for it because if you don’t get there you know it will crush you. It’s the thing that when you think about it, your heart beats a little harder. It’s the thing that you’ve always wanted, even when you were chasing other dreams.
Step 4.) Write it down, with a promise. Once you’ve found your why take some time to write out what it is. It doesn’t have to be pretty. Just write it down. Now promise yourself that you are committed to focusing on this for at least 5 minutes a day, every single day. Promise yourself that in a year, you will be smarter and be closer than ever before to achieving your goal.
A why is a wonderful thing. It changes the way you look at life. It changes the way you think, the way you prioritize your day. But you are the one who has to be devoted to making the changes that give legs to your why. You’re the person who has all the power to change your life. What are you going to do?
